The rainy spring weather that had us wondering if we needed to start building an ark was really hard on our Little Free Library. The winter snow likely didn't help. So before another Iowa winter came we needed to do some repairs.
By "we" I mean Michael.
We left the library up most of the summer, taking it down to do repairs shortly before the kids returned to school. We removed the books and took the library off the post (I did help with the moving part!) and put it in the garage so Michael could begin work on it. It wasn't long before the missing library was noticed.
A few hours later I was doing some yard work and heard kids go by on bikes followed by, "Oh no!"
A few days later we received an email from someone we didn't even know who lived a few blocks away. She and her family are frequent users of the library and wondered where it was. They must know some neighbors who knew how to contact us. By then our sign had blown away so it was just the empty post there. She was relieved to hear we were just repairing it and it would be back out as soon as the repairs were done.
On another night Michael was working on it in the garage when two neighborhood girls on their bikes stopped and asked him if he was building a new library. He told them he was fixing the one we had. They asked if it was broken and he explained that it needed a new roof.
With all the inquiries I decided I had better put another sign out... so another "under repair" sign was put on the post.
It's nice to know our library was missed.
Michael did a great job putting a new roof on it, staining it, sealing it, and reattaching our Little Free Library sign. Once done we put it back on the post and filled it with books once again.
(Pay no attention to the dead flowers in the window box. If questions, search for Summer Love post.)
We are happy to have it back up. It was really odd to look outside and not see the library there. I also planted irises and tulips around it. They should be a welcoming sight next spring!
Now that it is back up books are coming and going like crazy again.
We've had people comment on how nice it is for us to have the library. But I think we get just as much, if not more, enjoyment out of having the library as they do. When you find notes like this in the library you can't help but smile:
It is definitely a win-win.
