Dear...

Dear Weed In the Deck Railing Planter,

My husband spotted you growing so tall out there this week and asked about you.  I told him you weren't planted there, you must have just decided it looked like a good place to grow.  I can't say I blame you.  You get great morning sun.  You have tons of space to reach up to the sky. Throughout the day Belle and Willow come out to entertain you and you can see what is going on all over the neighborhood from your perfect spot on the deck.

Michael thought you looked like a tree with your big leaves.  He said having a tree growing in a plantar on a deck railing did not sound like a good idea at all. It made perfect sense to me!   How much closer can you get to the deck, than on it?  You would provide awesome shade for us and we could sit under you when you were big and tall!

But our friend Robin said no, you were not a tree.

Then we thought you might be a soybean!  You have big soybean-type leaves! And we talked about how we would let you grow all summer long.  Then in the fall we could harvest you and take your beans to the elevator where we would get tons of money for them!

But our friend Robin said no, you were not a soybean either.

Then Michael thought just maybe you looked like the beanstalk from Jack & The Beanstalk. Maybe if we let you grow really, really tall you would push way up into the sky and lead to some magical place we could explore.  A place without a scary giant.  A place with giant cups of chai, tons of basset hounds running around "aroooooing", blankets, slippers, music and books!

We didn't tell our friend Robin this idea.  She already thinks we are nuts. Telling her we think you might be a magical beanstalk would be crazy.

If you really are a weed, that's okay.  We can't all be roses nor can we all be daisies.  A perfect garden would be boring.  It's the weeds that get us out there spending time in the flowers in the first place.  Weeds are good (in moderation of course, as with all things).  Just never be a thistle......no one likes to go near them.

Whatever you are, you have done more than any daisy or rose ever could. We already know what daisies and roses are going to look like.  We don't have to spend time imagining what they could be.

But you.... you gave us so much enjoyment just thinking of all the possibilities... even the improbable beanstalk.  And you reminded us that beauty can be found in the most unlikely places if you just look hard enough.

You just have to look.

Thank you pretty little weed for growing in the planter on the deck railing.

Love,
Me
