Decking The Halls

Thanksgiving is over
Black Friday is too
It's on to December
There's so much to do!

There's the cards and the tree
And the baking and such
There's shopping and wrapping
There just is so much!

We had to get started
There was work to be done!
The basement held boxes
Of Christmas-filled fun!

So to start off the trimming
The tree was brought up
In the process I twisted
And hurt my gluteus.

I'd imagined heavenly music
While we decked the halls
But instead it was TV
And Vikings football.

I'd envisioned Christmas lights
I love their glow for this reason:
The warmth of the lights
Brings me joy in this season.

So the tree was plugged in
But the lights wouldn't light
The middle was dark,
Top and bottom were bright.

"Put lights on the list"
My hubby said to me.
We have to have lights
In the middle of the tree.

At this point I hoped
That the Grinch would appear
Take the tree for some fixing
Then bring it back here.

He did not, we forged on
What else could we do?
Things had to get better
That much we knew.

The wreath and the garlands
Were next to be done
But lo, not enough batteries
To tackle this one.

The shopping list grew
When would this cease?
This decorating was not going
As planned in the least.

The staple gun jammed up
My gluteus was still sore
The excitement I had felt
Was simply no more.

My Christmas-filled vision
Was just not in the cards.
This year the decorating
Just seemed way too hard.

Frustrations were building
And it soon became clear
That the Morrises needed
To find Christmas cheer.

Then I thought of how simple
That first Christmas was
A manger and baby
A Gift from above.

Christmas should not be
Frustrating or stressed
Hurried or rushed
All running, no rest.

Christmas should be
About one small babe
Who came in this world
With one mission: To save.

Christmas should be
Filled with love, peace, and joy
Brought to the world
In the form of a boy.

So the ornaments will stay
In their boxes this year
Simplicity is the theme
Of Christmastime here.

Just lights and some ribbon
Wrapped 'round the tree
A few simple gifts shared
'Tween Michael and me.

If God was content
With a manger and hay
For his only Son
To be born and lay

We too should be happy
And celebrate the season
By simply remembering:
He is the reason.
